Kathmandu— Following devastating flash floods in the Bhotekoshi River and its tributaries on August 26th, Nepal has received over 1.91 billion Nepalese Rupees (approximately $14.5 million USD) in public contributions to the Prime Minister’s Natural Disaster Relief Fund. The government issued an appeal for donations after the floods caused widespread damage, and funds were deposited into ten commercial banks between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday midnight, according to the Finance Ministry. This influx brings the total balance of the fund to 4.09 billion Nepalese Rupees.

Rapid Financial Response

The Finance Ministry has been tasked with coordinating contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund. The speed of the financial response is notable, with over 1.91 billion Rupees collected in just 36 hours following the government’s appeal for assistance.

The ministry reported that donations were received from various sources, totaling a significant sum within a short timeframe.

Ministerial Coordination and Large Donations

Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle is personally accepting contributions of 10 million Rupees or more from institutional donors. This direct involvement highlights the government’s commitment to efficiently managing and receiving disaster relief funds.

Surya Nepal Pvt. Ltd. presented a cheque for 150 million Rupees to the Finance Minister on Friday, demonstrating substantial corporate support for flood recovery efforts.

The Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund now stands at 4.09 billion Nepalese Rupees and will be used to aid in the ongoing relief and rebuilding efforts following the recent floods.
