Kathmandu— Nepal's Bhotekoshi River basin, recently struck by devastating flash floods, faces the prospect of further disruption as the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology forecasts moderate to heavy rainfall across much of the affected region. The predicted precipitation poses a significant challenge to rescue teams currently searching for those missing or stranded after the flooding in Rasuwa district. Meteorologists warn that heavier downpours could exacerbate conditions and hinder ongoing operations, necessitating increased caution. The forecast extends beyond the immediate flood zone, encompassing hilly and mountainous areas as well as parts of the Terai region.

Rainfall Forecast for Affected Areas

Meteorologist Hari Prasad Dahal stated that most locations within the Bhotekoshi flood-affected area in Rasuwa are likely to experience moderate rainfall throughout the day. He cautioned that heavy rain may occur in isolated areas, potentially impacting search and rescue efforts and emphasizing the need for precaution.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology also predicts moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning across several provinces, including Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpashchim, as well as portions of Madhes and Koshi provinces.

Wider Regional Weather Patterns

The forecast extends beyond the immediate flood zone, indicating a possibility of moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning in many places within Nepal’s hilly and mountainous regions. Heavy rain is specifically anticipated in one or two locations across the hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.

The Department also highlighted potential for heavy precipitation in the hilly areas of Karnali province, as well as both the hilly and Terai regions of Lumbini and Sudurpashchim.

Nighttime Conditions

Tonight, moderate rainfall with thunder, lightning, and even snowfall is expected in many mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces. Similar conditions are also possible in other hilly and mountainous regions throughout the country.

Rescue teams continue to operate in challenging conditions, and authorities are closely monitoring weather patterns for any changes that may further impact operations.
