The ferry, carrying 267 passengers according to Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Unal Ustel, capsized off the coast of North Cyprus on Sunday. The vessel had departed from the port of Kyrenia, also known as Girne, before encountering difficulties a few kilometers offshore. Images broadcast by Turkish television depicted the overturned ferry in calm seas, with individuals wearing life vests visible on its hull.

Rescue Operations Underway

Turkish Cypriot Transport Minister Erhan Arikli confirmed one passenger death and stated that rescue operations were focused on transporting any injured passengers to Girne Port for immediate medical attention at local hospitals. The Turkish Cypriot health ministry issued a statement indicating that preparations had been made to ensure a swift response from both rescue and health services, with hospitals placed on alert to receive potential patients.

Investigation Launched

Authorities have initiated an investigation into the cause of the ferry’s capsizing. Arikli indicated to Anadolu agency that the circumstances surrounding the incident would be thoroughly examined to determine contributing factors.
