Kathmandu— Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has requested assistance from Greek President Constantine Tassoulas in enforcing the United States-brokered framework agreement with Israel, which aims to end ongoing conflicts. This request came hours after Greece and Israel announced a multibillion-dollar arms deal. The framework agreement calls for the disarmament of Hezbollah, withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, and deployment of the Lebanese army to the area.

Framework Agreement Details

The US-brokered framework agreement signed in late June outlines steps towards ending hostilities between Israel and Lebanon. It includes the disarmament of Hezbollah, withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, and deployment of the Lebanese army to the area. However, Hezbollah has rejected the deal unless Israel first withdraws its forces from Lebanese territory.

Greek Involvement

In a meeting on Monday in Athens, President Aoun asked Greek President Constantine Tassoulas for assistance in facilitating an end to Israeli occupation and conflict with Hezbollah. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that Greece supports “the sovereignty, independence and unity of Lebanon” and would support efforts aimed at de-escalation.

Humanitarian Impact

Since March, Israel has killed more than 4,300 people in Lebanon, wounded over 12,000, and destroyed between 60 to 70 villages. President Aoun warned that solving the problem by military force will not succeed and emphasized that the framework agreement needs to be implemented on both sides.

Future Negotiations

The next round of talks between Israel and Lebanon is set for September, following a seventh round of US-mediated negotiations in Rome. Despite ongoing discussions, Israel has continued its attacks in southern Lebanon during the negotiation process.
