Kathmandu— Ralph Nader, a civic advocate, has penned an open letter to Rep. Hakeem Jeffries urging him to announce his intention to impeach President Donald Trump should he become the next House Speaker in January 2027. The letter suggests that Jeffries' recent meeting with Jared Kushner, a close advisor to Trump, raises questions about potential deals involving impeachment and legislative support. Nader argues that such a stance would align with public opinion and the findings of legal experts who have called for action against Trump's alleged violations of law.
Public Opinion on Impeachment
Nader points out that about 90% of Democratic voters and two-thirds of independent voters support impeachment. He cites polls by Celinda Lake and detailed reports from the Bar of the City of New York, which concluded that Trump's actions warrant immediate congressional action to address escalating abuses of executive power.
Jeffries' Response to Impeachment
In April, when asked about his stance on impeachment by a reporter, Jeffries responded: “I don’t want to get ahead of that discussion.” Nader criticizes this response as signaling indifference towards public opinion and the need for accountability. He argues that Trump's actions have endangered America’s democracy and weakened protections for lower-income Americans.
Democratic Party Leadership Critique
The letter also critiques the Democratic leadership, including Jeffries, for not engaging with independent citizen groups and progressive labor unions. Nader suggests this exclusion has contributed to political failures and a lack of clear policy direction from the party.
Impeachment as a Political Strategy
Nader argues that an impeachment drive could galvanize Democratic voters, increase voter turnout, and lead to a decisive victory in November. He questions whether Jeffries is willing to support such a move or if he will continue to delay action despite the mounting evidence of Trump's misconduct.
