Janet Brof: A Life Devoted to Poetry and Social Justice

Kathmandu— Janet Brof, a celebrated poet born in New York City in 1929, has spent decades fostering poetic expression among Latin American immigrants and raising funds for medical facilities in Nicaragua. Her dedication extends beyond literature; she established the Julio Cortázar Hospital Fund to support healthcare initiatives in Central America.

Poetic Mentorship

Janet Brof's influence as a teacher is profound, particularly among Spanish-speaking adults who immigrated to New York. She believed that poetry could help these individuals express their inner lives and improve their quality of life. Despite her students' limited formal education, Janet remained committed to teaching them the art of poetry.

Julio Cortázar Hospital Fund

Out of concern for Central Americans, Janet created the Julio Cortázar Hospital Fund, named after the celebrated Argentine writer known for his solidarity with the region’s struggles. The fund raised enough money to support a cancer treatment facility in Nicaragua through cultural events attended by notable figures such as Arthur Miller and Harold Pinter.

Impact on Students

One of Janet's students, Olga Rodríguez, exemplifies the transformative power of poetry. A 65-year-old woman from the Dominican Republic who had never attended school, Olga found solace and a new lease on life through Janet’s classes. Her poem 'My Old Age' reflects her journey from despair to renewed hope.
