UN Nuclear Watchdog Cautions on Access to Iranian Sites

Kathmandu— The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations' nuclear watchdog, has issued a call for 'utmost urgency' in addressing the lack of access to Iran’s nuclear facilities. In its latest quarterly report released on Tuesday, the IAEA highlighted that the absence of information and access to verify Iran's nuclear material poses significant proliferation concerns.

Concerns Over Isfahan Plant

The IAEA report specifically raised alarms over the lack of access to the Isfahan plant, which has been targeted multiple times by both the US and Israel in recent months. The facility's importance lies in its role within Iran’s nuclear program, making it a critical site for verification efforts.

IAEA Director General's Statement

Rafael Grossi, the IAEA Director General, expressed his conviction that long-standing issues and recurring crises surrounding access to Iranian sites must be resolved through a verifiable diplomatic agreement. He emphasized the need for sustained cooperation to address these concerns effectively.

Iran's Response

In response to the IAEA’s demands, Iran has stated that inspections of sites targeted by military action require special arrangements. Mohammad Eslami, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, noted on August 26 that specific criteria and protocols must be developed for inspecting these sites.

Background of Tensions

The US has cited preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon as the rationale behind its military actions in March. However, Tehran has shifted focus to control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz waterway. Despite claims by former President Donald Trump that the US had destroyed Iranian nuclear facilities and crippled their program, Iran’s enriched uranium remains unaccounted for.

The IAEA's latest report will be discussed at its board of governors meeting from September 21-25.
