Israeli Minister Proposes Crocodiles as Prison Guards for Palestinian Detainees

Kathmandu— Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has proposed surrounding a prison holding Palestinian security detainees with Nile crocodiles. Despite an injunction by the Jerusalem District Court preventing the transfer of crocodiles to the site, Ben-Gvir and Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman continue to advance the project, visiting Ketziot prison on Aug. 5, 2026, just three days after the court's decision.

Historical Context of Crocodiles in Israel

Nile crocodiles were once native to parts of what are now Israel and the Palestinian territories until their eradication by the early 20th century due to habitat destruction. In recent decades, they have been reintroduced through crocodile farms that marketed them as tourist attractions and for luxury leather trade.

Legal Status of Crocodiles

Crocodiles were classified as 'protected wildlife' under Israeli law since the 1950s. A 1990 amendment introduced the category of 'cultivated wildlife,' allowing commercial breeding while subject to state supervision. In 2026, environmental minister Idit Silman revived this category for security purposes.

Criticism and Opposition

The crocodile prison plan has faced widespread opposition from Israeli nature conservation experts and legal advisers. Critics argue that crocodiles are poorly suited for prison security and raise concerns about the welfare of both the animals and public safety.
