Kathmandu— Gloria Steinem, the renowned feminist author and activist who became one of the most recognizable figures in the United States' women’s rights movement, has died at the age of 92. Known for her trademark streaked hair parted down the middle and large aviator glasses, Steinem was a fierce advocate for women's rights throughout her life. She passed away on Wednesday at her home in New York City.

Activism and Advocacy

Steinem began her career as a journalist but shifted to activism after witnessing the bold advocacy of women speaking out for abortion rights in 1969. She credits this moment with changing her path, stating that it was 'the beginning of activism' for her. Despite overcoming a deep fear of public speaking, Steinem became known for her presence at college campuses and community centers, as well as rallies and marches across the country.

Ms Magazine Co-Founder

As a co-founder of Ms Magazine, Steinem was instrumental in providing a platform for feminist voices. Her work with the magazine helped to amplify issues affecting women and became a symbol of the feminist movement. In recent years, she continued her advocacy through writing and hosting talking circles at her home.

Impact on Feminism

Steinem's influence extended beyond U.S. borders as she traveled globally to speak out on issues such as genital mutilation and Korean reconciliation. However, the core of her work remained focused on achieving equality for women. Her ability to listen and make others feel seen and heard was a significant part of her legacy.
