Nepal’s Collective Amnesia Hinders Disaster Preparedness

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— Nepal experiences frequent natural disasters such as floods and landslides, with large-scale events occurring every decade. Despite the high casualties and widespread impact, these tragedies are often quickly forgotten, posing a significant challenge to disaster preparedness and response efforts in the country.

Recent Disasters

The Bhotekoshi flood of September 2024 claimed over 1100 lives and affected thousands more. In 2023, the Jajarkot earthquake resulted in 154 deaths. However, these events are often overshadowed by larger disasters like the devastating 2015 earthquake that remains vividly remembered across Nepal.

Vulnerability to Climate Change

Nepal's geography makes it particularly vulnerable to climate change-related natural disasters. The country has over 2000 glacial lakes, many of which could burst or overflow at any time. Additionally, Nepal is situated between two tectonic plates, increasing the risk of earthquakes and landslides.

Infrastructure Challenges

Highways are often constructed through unstable hills that are actively eroding, posing significant risks to both infrastructure and human life. Projects like the Naghdhunga–Mugling highway and the Pushpalal highway carve through such areas without proper safety measures in place.

Expert Insights

Dr. Ranjan Kumar Dahal recently commented that while people may listen to experts today, they tend to forget crucial information soon after. This collective amnesia hinders the implementation of long-term disaster management strategies and proactive measures.

Nepal must prioritize remembering past disasters to learn from them and take proactive steps towards better preparedness and risk mitigation.
