Kathmandu— Global food prices have reached a four-year high, according to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization, as conflicts and extreme weather events disrupt supply chains and drive up costs across all major food categories.

Rising Index Across All Categories

The FAO Food Price Index climbed to 133.3 points in August, marking the third consecutive monthly increase and the highest level since late 2022, as reported by the UN agency.

Every category tracked by the index—cereals, vegetable oils, sugar, meat, and dairy—experienced price growth during the month, with sugar prices rising nearly 12 percent to a one-year high and cereal prices climbing over two percent to their highest point in more than two years.

The UN warns that the combination of ongoing conflicts, climate disruptions, and the return of El Nino could further strain global food security in the coming months.
