Defending champions recover from two goals down as Messi and Enzo Fernández inspire dramatic victory; Egypt’s historic dream shattered in stoppage time

Miami, USA: Defending FIFA World Cup champions Argentina produced one of the greatest comebacks in World Cup history, recovering from a two-goal deficit to defeat Egypt 3-2 in a breathtaking Round of 16 clash and book their place in the quarterfinals.

For much of the match, Egypt appeared on course to pull off one of the biggest upsets the tournament has ever witnessed. Inspired by captain Mohamed Salah, the Pharaohs stunned Argentina with disciplined defending and devastating counterattacks, taking a 2-0 lead before the South Americans mounted an unforgettable late rally.

The comeback was completed with three goals in the final 11 minutes, keeping Argentina’s title defense alive while ending Egypt’s remarkable World Cup journey in heartbreaking fashion.

Egypt Fearless Against the World Champions

Despite facing one of the tournament favorites, Egypt showed no signs of intimidation.

Coach Hossam Hassan set his team up with a compact defensive structure and relied on the pace of Mohamed Salah, Hassan, and Mostafa Zico on the counterattack.

Argentina dominated possession throughout the opening stages, but Egypt’s defensive organization and goalkeeper Mohamed Shobeir frustrated Lionel Messi and his teammates, repeatedly denying clear scoring opportunities.

VAR Gives Argentina a Lifeline

In the 58th minute, Egypt thought they had doubled their lead through Mostafa Zico, who finished a brilliant counterattack.

However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was disallowed because of a foul committed earlier in the build-up.

Although disappointed, Egypt refused to lose confidence and continued threatening Argentina on the break.

Zico Finally Doubles Egypt’s Lead

The Egyptians eventually got the second goal they deserved in the 67th minute.

Following an Argentine corner, Egypt launched a lightning-fast counterattack. Mohamed Salah carried the ball forward before releasing Hassan, who burst down the right flank and delivered a perfect cutback.

Mostafa Zico arrived inside the penalty area and calmly fired home from close range to make it 2-0, leaving the defending champions on the brink of elimination.

Argentina Begin the Fightback

With their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread, Argentina threw everything forward.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 79th minute, when Cristian Romero powered home a header from Lionel Messi’s corner kick to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

The goal completely changed the momentum of the match as Argentina poured forward in search of an equalizer.

Messi Delivers When Argentina Needed Him Most

Just four minutes later, the captain produced another moment of brilliance.

After Lautaro Martínez nodded the ball back into the penalty area, Lionel Messi reacted instantly, striking a fierce low shot into the net with almost no backlift.

The goal sent the Argentine supporters into delirium and leveled the match at 2-2.

Enzo Fernández Completes Historic Comeback

With seven minutes of stoppage time added, the match seemed destined for extra time.

Instead, in the second minute of stoppage time (90+2), another cross from the right found Enzo Fernández, whose powerful header flew into the top corner beyond goalkeeper Mohamed Shobeir.

The dramatic goal completed an extraordinary comeback and gave Argentina a 3-2 lead for the first time in the match.

Late Controversy Sparks Egyptian Fury

Egyptian players and coaching staff protested furiously after Argentina’s winning goal.

They claimed that Alexis Mac Allister had fouled Ahmed Fathy inside Egypt’s penalty area moments before Argentina launched the counterattack that resulted in Fernández’s winner.

The referee allowed play to continue, prompting angry protests from the Egyptian bench. Coach Hossam Hassan was booked, while one member of the Egyptian staff received a red card for entering the field during the confrontation.

Joy for Messi, Heartbreak for Egypt

At the final whistle, Lionel Messi was overcome with emotion, shedding tears of joy after leading Argentina to one of the most memorable comeback victories in the country’s World Cup history.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah and the Egyptian players collapsed to the ground in disbelief after coming within minutes of eliminating the defending champions.

Despite the defeat, Egypt earned worldwide admiration for their fearless display and came agonizingly close to producing one of the greatest World Cup shocks ever witnessed.
