Kathmandu— On Wednesday, India's upper house of parliament, the Rajya Sabha, approved a bill that increases the number of judges in the country’s Supreme Court from 34 to 38. The Lok Sabha had already passed the legislation on Monday, completing parliamentary approval for the measure which was first introduced as an ordinance earlier this year.

Infrastructure Concerns Raised

During the debate in the Rajya Sabha, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP Sasmit Patra emphasized the need to strengthen not just the number of judges but also the infrastructure supporting India’s highest court. He urged the government to engage with the Chief Justice of India and the Judicial Infrastructure Advisory Committee to improve facilities for both judges and advocates.

Patra highlighted specific needs such as additional courtrooms, chambers for judges and advocates, a new Supreme Court Bar Association library, and dedicated offices for legal associations.

Historical Context and Future Vision

The bill marks the first increase in the strength of India’s apex court since 2019. MP Sasmit Patra expressed hope that this move would renew faith in one of the country's most important constitutional institutions.

"When the story of independent India will be written, the Supreme Court will shine," Patra said, emphasizing the importance of a strong judiciary for the stability and security of the nation.
