Kathmandu— China is gearing up to host the 33rd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting in November, set to take place in Shenzhen. This event marks another significant diplomatic gathering under President Xi Jinping’s leadership, showcasing his vision for global cooperation and fostering mutual trust among world leaders.
Hospitality as Diplomacy
President Xi Jinping's approach to diplomacy emphasizes hospitality and personal engagement. In May 2023, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, he welcomed Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev for a state visit in Xi'an, where they discussed bilateral ties and exchanged warm wishes. This attentiveness has become a hallmark of China's diplomatic efforts, helping to build trust and friendship among visiting leaders.
Proposals for Global Challenges
Beyond hospitality, these gatherings serve as platforms for addressing global challenges. In 2016, during the first G20 summit hosted by China, development was placed at the forefront of the macro-policy agenda, and an action plan to advance the UN's Sustainable Development Goals was adopted. Xi Jinping has also introduced initiatives such as the Global Security Initiative in 2022 and the Global Civilization Initiative in 2023, reflecting China’s commitment to shared prosperity.
Intensive Diplomatic Engagement
Xi Jinping's personal involvement is evident in his intensive diplomatic schedules. For instance, ahead of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in 2018, he held 11 bilateral meetings with African leaders within a tight timeframe. At the G20 Hangzhou Summit in 2016, Xi attended over 20 official events and delivered multiple speeches, underscoring his commitment to advancing international dialogue.
Concrete Actions and Outcomes
China has not only proposed initiatives but also taken concrete actions. The Belt and Road Initiative, launched in 2013, has generated nearly $1 trillion in global investment and created at least 500,000 jobs in partner countries. At the 2024 FOCAC Beijing Summit, Xi Jinping announced new partnership actions, opening a new chapter in China-Africa relations.
As Shenzhen prepares to welcome world leaders for the APEC meeting, China renews its commitment to fostering peace and development through openness and cooperation.
