Calls Grow for Independent Inquiry into Army College Amid Rape Allegations

Kathmandu— Calls are growing for an independent inquiry into the Army Foundation College (AFC) at Harrogate, North Yorkshire, following allegations of rape and sexual abuse against female recruits. Four young women told the BBC they were sexually assaulted and harassed during their time at AFC when they were 17 years old. Former MP Sarah Atherton and Emma Lewell MP have both called for an independent inquiry to restore public confidence in the college.

Allegations of Sexual Violence

The four women, whose identities are protected, described a culture of misogyny and sexual violence at AFC. One woman, Tilly, recounted being raped by several fellow soldiers while another, Amy, faced daily harassment due to a faulty lock on her room door. A third woman detailed misogynistic comments from instructors, such as "It's all about the pussy and how much of it you can get."

Political Calls for Action

"Concerns at AFC Harrogate were raised years ago, and subsequent data and complaints suggest the problems continued without adequate action," said Sarah Atherton. Emma Lewell MP added that if this was any other school or residential environment for children, it would have been closed down. Two Liberal Democrat MPs, Tom Gordon and James MacCleary, wrote to Defence Secretary Wes Streeting calling for an independent inquiry into the college's culture, leadership, and safeguarding practices.

Military Response

"Unacceptable and criminal behavior has absolutely no place in our Armed Forces," said the Army. The service highlighted several reforms introduced to support victims, including the Defence Serious Crime Command providing specialist support through the justice process outside of the Army chain of command. AFC is committed to creating a professional, supportive, and safe environment for all recruits.
