Jalapeno Recall Expands Across US Amid Salmonella Outbreak

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— A widespread recall of jalapeno products is underway across the United States after being linked to a Salmonella outbreak affecting at least 345 people, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The recalled produce was supplied by Taylor Farms and distributed through major grocery chains like Kroger, Walmart, and Target, as well as restaurants. The affected jalapenos were grown in Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors. Health authorities are investigating the source of the contamination, which began in mid-June and has resulted in dozens of hospitalizations.

Outbreak Details

Health officials report at least 345 individuals have contracted Salmonella since mid-June, with numerous hospitalizations reported across multiple states. Symptoms of Salmonella infection typically include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Vulnerable populations—young children, older adults, and those with compromised immune systems—face a heightened risk of severe complications from the bacteria.

Recalled Products and Retailers

The FDA identified that the recalled jalapeno products originated in the Mexican state of Sinaloa and were distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors. A significant number of retailers received the contaminated produce, including Hannaford, Kroger, Stop & Shop, Target, Trader Joe’s, Walmart, and Whole Foods Market. The recall impacts stores across 26 states as investigators continue to trace the outbreak's reach.

Recent Food Safety Concerns at Taylor Farms

This is not the first food safety issue involving Taylor Farms in recent months. Last month, Taylor Farms de Mexico recalled shredded iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico due to a cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to illnesses reported among patrons of Taco Bell restaurants in multiple states. That outbreak, which began in May, has sickened at least 6,358 people across 15 states and resulted in 278 hospitalizations and two deaths.

Previous Contamination Incidents

Taylor Farms was also implicated in a 2024 E. coli outbreak connected to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders, highlighting ongoing concerns about food safety protocols within the supply chain. Health officials have cautioned that the actual number of Cyclospora infections from the lettuce recall is likely higher due to underreporting.

The investigation into the Salmonella outbreak remains active as health authorities work to pinpoint the exact source and prevent further illnesses. Consumers are advised to check for recalled products and follow safe food handling practices.
