Trump Claims Pro-Israel Lobby’s Influence in Congress Has Diminished

Kathmandu— Donald Trump, former United States president, recently stated that pro-Israel lobbying groups have experienced a decline in influence within Congress and across the American political landscape. The remarks came during a pre-taped interview with Wayne Allyn Root on the “Real America’s Voice” network, where Trump observed changes in support for Israel over the past decade, particularly among Democrats in the House of Representatives. He noted this shift contrasts sharply with the significant lobbying power these groups held 20 to 25 years ago, coinciding with a recent survey indicating eroding support for the US ally and increasing polarization within both major parties.

Erosion of Support Confirmed by Polling

A recent survey conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs revealed a marked decrease in support for Israel, highlighting growing opposition from Democrats and divisions among Republicans. This data corroborates Trump’s assessment of shifting political dynamics surrounding the US ally.

Repeated Claims of Shifting Allegiances

This is not the first instance of Trump acknowledging diminishing support for Israel within American politics. In September 2025, he told White House correspondent Reagan Reese of the Daily Caller that he was aware of declining support among young Republicans, stating that Israel’s previously unwavering endorsement in Congress was no longer guaranteed. He has repeatedly targeted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a prominent Jewish official and long-time pro-Israel voice, claiming Schumer has become “virtually a Palestinian.” Trump first made this claim in March 2025 during an Oval Office meeting with reporters, then again at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in July.

Schumer's Recent Criticism of Israeli Policy

Senator Schumer publicly criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in March 2024, calling for a leadership change following concerns over civilian casualties in Gaza. This marked Schumer’s most vocal critique of Israel since the start of the conflict in October 2023 and signaled support for a two-state solution. He has also recently reprimanded Trump's handling of the US-Israel war on Iran, describing his approach as disastrous.

Controversial Rhetoric Draws Criticism

Trump’s repeated use of “Palestinian” as a pejorative term directed at Schumer drew widespread condemnation from Jewish and Muslim groups in 2025. Critics viewed the remarks as a xenophobic slur, accusing the former president of attempting to frame Palestinian identity as a political insult.

Trump's comments reflect a perceived shift in the long-standing relationship between the United States and Israel, particularly regarding the influence of pro-Israel lobbying groups and evolving attitudes within both major American political parties.
