Kathmandu— Nepal’s Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle has appealed to Nepali citizens living abroad to confidently consider investment opportunities within their home country, particularly focusing on sectors such as tourism, information technology, green energy, and high-value agricultural products. The call came in a video message delivered to the 11th Asia Pacific Conference of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) held in Guangzhou, China, where Wagle highlighted government efforts to improve the investment climate and create employment opportunities. He emphasized recent policy changes designed to foster growth in emerging fields like Artificial Intelligence and IT, aiming to attract capital from overseas Nepalis.
Investment-Friendly Reforms
The Finance Minister stated that the government is actively working to establish a more favorable environment for investment, having introduced 27 new laws through the recent budget. These legislative changes are intended to streamline processes and reduce barriers for both domestic and international investors. He also noted that reforming the tax system has been a priority, with the goal of increasing state revenue and improving overall economic governance.
According to Wagle, these reforms represent the initial phase of a broader effort to modernize Nepal’s economic landscape. He described the budget as instrumental in steering economic governance in a new direction, signaling a commitment to long-term sustainable growth.
Focus on Key Sectors
Dr. Wagle specifically identified tourism, information technology (IT), green energy, and high-value agricultural products as key areas for potential investment. He highlighted the growing opportunities within the IT sector, particularly in Artificial Intelligence, noting that policy-level strategies are being implemented to support its development. The emphasis on these sectors reflects a broader government strategy to diversify Nepal’s economy and create new avenues for employment.
Wagle also stressed that creating decent employment opportunities remains one of the government's key priorities, suggesting that increased investment will contribute directly to job creation within the country.
The Finance Minister’s message aims to strengthen ties with the Nepali diaspora and encourage them to play a role in Nepal’s economic development. The success of these efforts will depend on continued implementation of investment-friendly policies and sustained economic growth.
