Kathmandu— Nepal’s Minister for Information and Communication, Dr. Bikram Timilsina, conducted an inspection of landslide-affected areas within the Nuwakot district on Saturday, assessing damage to infrastructure and meeting with residents impacted by recent disasters. The visit focused on settlements in Suryagadhi Rural Municipality and various wards within the district, where landslides have disrupted roads, water supplies, and power lines. Dr. Timilsina directed concerned agencies to prioritize protecting vulnerable communities, relocating those at high risk, and restoring essential services as quickly as possible.

Inspection of Affected Settlements

Minister Dr. Timilsina visited settlements impacted by landslides in Semrang, Phatpur, and Paharethok, engaging with locals to understand the causes of the disasters and assess the condition of vital infrastructure. He specifically inquired about road networks, people’s mobility, power outages, and the status of the Dwache Drinking Water Project. Inspections also extended to Ratmate, Ramche, and Devithan, where damage to water supply pipelines was observed.

Directives for Immediate Action

Following the inspections and consultations with stakeholders, Dr. Timilsina instructed relevant agencies to immediately protect at-risk communities and facilitate the relocation of settlements deemed unsafe. He also directed efforts towards clearing obstructed roads and ensuring the resumption of traffic, as well as restoring access to drinking water and electricity. The Minister pledged to take necessary steps based on technical studies and implement decisions informed by recommendations from local officials.

Coordination with Disaster Management Teams

The inspection was carried out in coordination with Shambhu Prasad Regmi, Chief District Officer and Coordinator of the District Disaster Management Committee, along with representatives from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, Nepal Telecommunications Authority, Nepal Electricity Authority, Road Division Office, and Infrastructure Development Office. Dr. Timilsina emphasized that the federal government is prepared to implement decisions based on their collective recommendations.

Commitment to Long-Term Infrastructure Improvements

Dr. Timilsina stated that the federal government will prioritize infrastructure development and maintenance, working collaboratively with all relevant bodies to address key issues in a timely manner. He assured stakeholders of ongoing support for ensuring safety within settlements and providing assistance to affected households.
