Erdogan Suggests Egypt Could Join Tripartite Defence Pact

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that Egypt could potentially join the joint defence agreement signed last week between Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, describing Cairo’s inclusion as “possible.” The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement commits member states to unified action if any one of them is attacked, a concept similar to NATO's Article 5, though officials have cautioned against direct comparisons. Erdogan made the comments in an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, also discussing regional issues including tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing conflicts in Syria, Gaza, and Lebanon.

Expanding Defence Alliance

The deal, formally known as the Mecca Pact, was signed by Erdogan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif last Friday. It establishes a collective-deterrence framework where an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. While some analysts have drawn parallels to NATO’s Article 5, officials in Islamabad have clarified that the pact isn't intended as a direct equivalent or aimed at any specific nation.

Regional Stability Concerns

Erdogan emphasized Turkiye’s commitment to regional stability, specifically mentioning Syria, Gaza and Lebanon. He stated Ankara would continue efforts to support peace in these areas, including plans for a visit to Syria and ensuring the inclusion of Syrian Kurds in any future stability arrangements. Regarding Gaza, Erdogan affirmed that Turkiye “cannot leave Gaza alone” and will provide continued support.

Strait of Hormuz and European Relations

The Turkish leader identified reopening the Strait of Hormuz as a priority for Ankara, arguing its closure benefits no one. He also credited Qatar with playing a key role in mediating efforts to de-escalate regional conflicts. Turning to Europe, Erdogan indicated that Turkiye no longer prioritizes EU membership, suggesting that Europe would ultimately suffer from this shift.

F-35 Dispute and US Relations

Erdogan revealed he received assurances from former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the potential resumption of F-35 fighter jet sales to Turkiye, but awaits fulfillment of that promise. Turkiye was removed from the F-35 program in 2019 following its purchase of Russia’s S-400 air defence system, a move Washington deemed a security risk. Trump indicated willingness to lift related sanctions and reconsider Turkiye's inclusion in the program, though Congressional opposition and existing legislation remain obstacles.

The potential expansion of the Mecca Pact to include Egypt remains subject to further discussion among member states, while the resolution of disputes regarding F-35 fighter jets hinges on navigating US congressional hurdles.
