North Korean Official Denies Communication Between Kim Jong Un and US President

Kathmandu— Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has publicly denied reports of communication between her brother and U.S. President Donald Trump, asserting that the United States continues to pursue what she termed a “hostile” policy toward North Korea. The statement, released Wednesday by the state-run Korean Central News Agency, came after Trump indicated he had been in touch with Kim Jong Un and described his responses as “very positive.” This denial follows recent shifts in U.S. foreign policy regarding alliances with South Korea and pressure on allies to contribute financially to military operations.

Conflicting Accounts of Communication

Kim Yo Jong stated she had no knowledge of any communication between the two leaders, suggesting it would be unusual if she were unaware of such a development concerning North Korean foreign policy. This directly contradicts President Trump’s claim on Monday that he had been in contact with Kim Jong Un and received a positive response to a potential meeting. Trump has consistently emphasized what he describes as a strong rapport with the North Korean leader, stating, “Kim Jong Un has always treated me with great respect,” and adding, “I understand him. He understands me.”

Strain on US-South Korea Alliance

The denial of communication occurs amid escalating tensions surrounding financial contributions to defense agreements and military exercises in the region. President Trump recently ordered a significant reduction in joint military drills with South Korea, which hosts approximately 28,500 U.S. troops as part of the legacy of the Korean War. He has also expressed frustration with South Korea’s reluctance to assist in unspecified operations against Iran and demanded increased financial contributions for protection. Trump claimed he secured $3 billion annually from South Korea during his first term and intended to increase that amount.

History of Engagement and Current Concerns

The exchange highlights a complex history between the two leaders, beginning with threats made by Trump early in his presidency regarding North Korea’s nuclear capabilities. This was followed by unprecedented meetings in Singapore and at the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in 2018 and 2019, where discussions centered on the “complete denuclearisation” of the Korean Peninsula. However, analysts note that these efforts have yielded limited results, with North Korea continuing to expand its missile and nuclear programs and strengthening ties with Russia, including reportedly sending troops to support Moscow in Ukraine.

The conflicting statements from Washington and Pyongyang suggest a continued impasse in negotiations, while the evolving dynamics of regional alliances remain uncertain. Further developments are expected as both sides navigate complex geopolitical challenges.
