Canada Pledges $50 Million in Aid to Lebanon, Condemns Israeli Actions

Kathmandu— Canada has pledged an additional $50 million in humanitarian aid to Lebanon amidst ongoing conflict and escalating tensions with Israel, bringing its total assistance this year to over $575 million over the past decade. Secretary of State for International Development Randeep Sarai announced the new programs during a visit to shelters housing displaced people and Syrian refugees, while also condemning what he called Israel’s “unlawful invasion” of Lebanon and emphasizing the need for Beirut to govern its own territory.

Escalating Tensions and Canadian Response

Amid escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanon in March, Canada issued a warning on March 25 stating that Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity “must not be violated” and strongly condemned plans by Israeli forces to occupy southern Lebanon. Sarai’s visit underscores Canada's commitment to the region, with the new aid intended to support Lebanese families affected by the conflict. He stated, “Our commitment is long-term, and we’re there for Lebanon.”

Framework Agreement and Obstruction Claims

A US-mediated framework agreement signed in late June aimed to establish “pilot zones” for the return of small areas in southern Lebanon from Israeli forces to the Lebanese army. However, in late July, the Lebanese Armed Forces accused Israel of obstructing their efforts to take control of security in the region. This obstruction has further complicated efforts to de-escalate the conflict and restore stability.

Humanitarian Crisis and Displacement

The ongoing war has resulted in over 4,000 deaths and widespread destruction across Lebanon, with approximately 360,000 people currently displaced according to United Nations estimates. Canada’s long-standing support for Lebanon reflects the significant Lebanese diaspora within its borders; Sarai noted that Canada has provided around $575 million in assistance over the last ten years.

Commitments from Lebanese Leadership

During his visit, Sarai met with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. Both leaders reportedly pledged to reinstate state authority throughout Lebanon and implement reforms aimed at combating corruption. However, Israeli officials maintain they will not withdraw from Lebanon until Hezbollah is disarmed.

The situation in southern Lebanon remains tense as both sides continue to assert their positions, with the implementation of the framework agreement stalled by accusations of obstruction.
