China Issues Flood Alerts for Southern Provinces as Typhoon Narra Approaches

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— China’s Ministry of Water Resources initiated a Level-IV emergency response on Saturday to address potential flooding in the provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan as Typhoon Narra approaches southern China. The 19th typhoon of the year is forecast to bring heavy rainfall between August 22nd and 24th, potentially causing rivers to swell and triggering floods in vulnerable areas. Authorities are prioritizing monitoring, early warning systems, and evacuation procedures to protect residents and infrastructure.

Typhoon Narra's Projected Path

Typhoon Narra is expected to bring heavy to torrential rainfall across southern and western Guangxi, Guangdong, and Hainan provinces. Some areas are forecast to experience extremely heavy downpours over the next several days. The Ministry of Water Resources indicated that water levels in rivers such as the Zuojiang and Mingjiang—tributaries of the Yujiang River—are likely to rise significantly.

Emergency Response Measures

The ministry has directed local water resources departments to closely monitor the typhoon’s development, enhance rainfall and river monitoring capabilities, and improve forecasting and early warning systems. A key focus is ensuring the proper operation of water conservancy projects to mitigate flood risks. Authorities were also urged to prioritize safety measures for tourists and construction workers in potentially affected areas.

Fujian Province Also on Alert

In addition to the southern provinces, a Level-IV emergency response was jointly activated by the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters and the Ministry of Emergency Management for typhoon and flood control in southeastern Fujian Province. This indicates a broader concern about the potential impact of Typhoon Narra across multiple regions.

Flood Control System Explained

China employs a four-tier flood-control emergency response system, with Level I representing the most severe situation. The activation of a Level-IV response signifies that while conditions are serious enough to warrant increased preparedness and monitoring, they have not yet reached critical levels.

Authorities continue to monitor Typhoon Narra’s trajectory and rainfall patterns, preparing for potential flooding and prioritizing the safety of residents in affected provinces.
