Iran’s Parliament Approves Plan to Charge Fees for Passage Through Strait of Hormuz

Kathmandu— Iran's parliament has advanced a plan to charge vessels passage fees for navigating the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. The draft law, backed by the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, stipulates that ships from countries authorized to transit the strait will be required to pay for services provided by Iran. This move comes amid ongoing tensions with the United States and international efforts to curb Iran’s economic activity.

Legislative Advancement

The Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission has approved a draft law outlining the fees for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The legislation details that vessels from nations permitted access will be obligated to pay Tehran for unspecified services related to safe passage.

US Response

United States Treasury Secretary Bessent stated Washington’s intention to “sever every economic lifeline” supporting Iran, signaling continued pressure on the Iranian economy despite the new legislative development. This statement underscores the ongoing economic conflict between the two nations.

The draft law now moves forward within the Iranian parliamentary system, with further debate and potential amendments expected before final approval.
