Kathmandu— Chinese President Xi Jinping directed all available resources toward search and rescue efforts Wednesday after a mudslide struck the Gyirong border port in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region, resulting in at least three confirmed deaths and leaving 265 people missing as of 8 p.m. local time. The disaster occurred in Gyirong County, prompting immediate calls for evacuation of at-risk residents and provision of medical care to the injured. Xi also emphasized strengthening monitoring systems and preparing for potential secondary disasters amidst ongoing flood control efforts across China.

Immediate Response and Casualty Count

President Xi Jinping issued instructions calling for all-out rescue operations following reports of severe casualties at the Gyirong port. As of Wednesday evening, authorities confirmed three fatalities and reported 265 individuals missing, though officials are continuing to verify these numbers. Premier Li Qiang also issued directives demanding immediate verification of affected populations and a full commitment to rescue and relief work.

Coordination with International Partners

Premier Li Qiang instructed the Foreign Ministry to enhance communication and coordination with neighboring countries, emphasizing the importance of information sharing and collaborative efforts in managing the rescue and relief operations. This move highlights the cross-border implications of the disaster given its location at a major border port.

On-Site Leadership and Disaster Prevention

Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing led a team of officials to the site to oversee rescue and disaster response activities, demonstrating high-level government involvement in managing the crisis. President Xi Jinping also stressed the need for proactive measures to prevent future disasters, urging local authorities to prepare for worst-case scenarios and implement comprehensive flood and typhoon prevention strategies.

Ongoing Rescue Efforts

Authorities in Xizang have mobilized personnel and resources to conduct search and rescue operations at the Gyirong port. All relevant operational teams are currently engaged in responding to the disaster, with a focus on locating missing individuals and providing assistance to those affected.

Rescue and verification efforts remain ongoing as authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage and work to account for all missing persons.
