Kathmandu— At least 12 people have died and 54 others were injured Wednesday as wildfires swept through parts of northeastern Algeria, prompting evacuations of families from affected areas. The deaths occurred in the provinces of Jijel, Bejaia, and Tizi Ouzou, according to Minister of Interior Said Sayoud, who visited a hospital in Souk El Thenine to assess treatment for burn victims and those suffering from smoke inhalation. Authorities reported 154 fire outbreaks nationwide as a severe heatwave grips Algeria and neighboring Tunisia.

Extent of the Damage

Minister Sayoud detailed the casualties, stating five deaths were recorded in Jijel, four in Bejaia, and three in Tizi Ouzou. The hospital in Souk El Thenine is treating 54 burn cases, with six individuals listed in critical condition. Civil Protection teams responded to a total of 154 fire outbreaks across Algeria on Wednesday, including 36 fires specifically within the province of Bejaia.

Firefighting Efforts and Containment

Firefighting crews have successfully contained blazes in several provinces, including Skikda, El Tarf, Bouira, Tizi Ouzou, and Tebessa. However, operations continue in Bejaia, where 18 hotspots remain active, and in Jijel, where fires are burning across 12 municipalities. Regional news website Jijel News broadcast images of residents taking shelter in a post office amidst heavy smoke as the fires spread.

Recurring Wildfire Risk

Algeria frequently experiences deadly wildfires during the summer months, with at least six fatalities reported last month alone. Intense heatwaves and strong winds have increased fire risks along the country’s Mediterranean coastline in recent years, conditions worsened by ongoing drought and the broader impacts of climate change.

Authorities continue to battle active fires in Bejaia and Jijel provinces while providing aid to evacuated families and medical care to those injured.
