China Mobilizes Data Centers To Aid Gyirong Mudslide Rescue Efforts

Kathmandu— Following a recent mudslide that struck a port in Gyirong County, Xizang Autonomous Region, on the China-Nepal border, China has activated its national data centers to provide emergency support for rescue and research teams. The National Cryosphere Desert Data Center (NCDC) and other institutions have released over 100 gigabytes of datasets – including cryospheric, earthquake, satellite ocean, and remote sensing information – to aid in damage assessment, secondary disaster monitoring, and overall relief efforts. This mobilization demonstrates China’s commitment to utilizing technological resources for disaster response.

Data Center Contributions

The NCDC has made 53 service datasets available, totaling approximately 85 GB of data, accessible for download by emergency responders, rescue organizations, and research institutions. These datasets originate from a network of national centers including the National Earthquake Data Center, the National Satellite Ocean Application Service, and the China Center for Resources Satellite Data and Application.

The National Earth Observation Data Center has compiled over 20 GB of remote sensing data gathered from both civilian and commercial satellites. This imagery is intended to support assessments of road damage, identification of collapsed buildings, and monitoring for potential secondary disasters triggered by the initial mudslide.

Satellite Resource Deployment

In addition to data center contributions, the China National Space Administration has coordinated the deployment of satellite resources to capture emergency images of the affected area. Historical imagery of Gyirong County is also being utilized to provide context and aid in understanding the extent of the damage.

The provision of these datasets represents a key component of China’s broader strategy to integrate technology into disaster relief operations, facilitating more effective and informed response efforts.
