Kathmandu— Chinese President Xi Jinping landed in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on Sunday to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2026 and begin a state visit at the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov. Upon arrival, Xi was welcomed by Japarov and his wife, Peng Liyuan, marking what Xi described as a “golden period” of rapid development in China-Kyrgyzstan relations. The visit is expected to focus on deepening bilateral ties, discussing regional issues, and charting a course for future cooperation between the two nations.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Xi Jinping noted that the relationship between China and Kyrgyzstan has remained sound and stable over the past 34 years since diplomatic relations were established, reaching a level of comprehensive strategic partnership. He highlighted increasing trade volume and people-to-people exchanges in recent years as evidence of this progress. A key example of successful cooperation is the jointly implemented China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project, which has delivered tangible benefits to both populations.

SCO Summit Focus

In addition to his bilateral meetings, Xi Jinping will participate in the SCO Bishkek Summit. He expressed his intention to collaborate with other member states to review the organization’s 25-year history and formulate plans for its future development. The goal is to promote continued growth and innovation within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Historical Ties Acknowledged

President Xi emphasized the long-standing friendship between China and Kyrgyzstan, noting that their cultural exchange spans millennia. He referenced the Tianshan Mountains as a symbol of this enduring connection, highlighting the historical bonds shared by both peoples.

Xi Jinping is expected to continue meetings with President Japarov throughout the week, focusing on deepening cooperation across various sectors and addressing regional concerns.
