Kathmandu— Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin met on August 31, 2026, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. During their meeting, both leaders expressed optimism about strengthening China-Russia relations through strategic guidance and joint efforts across various sectors.

Strategic Guidance and Bilateral Progress

Xi Jinping emphasized that under his and Putin's strategic leadership, the foundation of China-Russia relations will become stronger, their progress steadier, and their future brighter. During Putin’s state visit to China in May, both leaders agreed on steering bilateral relations toward higher-quality development from a long-term perspective. They also reached consensus on deepening cooperation across various sectors under new circumstances.

International Landscape and SCO's Role

Xi noted that the international landscape is witnessing an increase in uncertain factors, but the global pursuit of peace, development, cooperation, and win-win outcomes remains unchanged. He highlighted the importance of the SCO in safeguarding regional stability and promoting regional development. China stands ready to work with Russia and other parties to ensure steady progress within the SCO.

Putin's Perspective on Bilateral Relations

Vladimir Putin stated that amid a turbulent international landscape, Russia-China relations have become a model for countries due to their comprehensive strategic coordination. He expressed willingness to maintain high-level exchanges and strengthen cooperation in trade, energy, industry, transportation, science, and technology with China.
