Trump Transfers National Park Firefighters for Birthday Decorations Amid Wildfire Crisis

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— Amid one of the worst wildfire seasons in recent history, President Donald Trump has transferred National Park Service firefighters from their duties in the West to help beautify Washington, D.C. for his upcoming 80th birthday celebration. This move comes as national parks are already understaffed due to previous budget cuts and face significant fire risks exacerbated by climate change.

Firefighters' Critical Role

National Park Service firefighters play a crucial role in containing wildfires, especially during severe seasons. The West has been experiencing some of the worst wildfire conditions on record this year, with high temperatures and drought contributing to increased fire risks. Removing these essential personnel from their posts could have serious consequences for public safety and environmental conservation.

Background of Staffing Issues

The National Park Service has already been facing staffing shortages due to budget cuts made by the Trump administration, known as 'DOGE' cuts. These reductions have left parks understaffed and less able to respond effectively to emergencies such as wildfires. The recent transfer of firefighters for non-emergency purposes further exacerbates these challenges.

Impact on National Parks

National parks are already under threat from climate change, with rising temperatures and reduced rainfall creating conditions ripe for wildfires. Last year, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon suffered significant damage due to a lack of resources to contain fires effectively. This year's fire season is expected to be even more severe, making the diversion of critical personnel particularly concerning.
