Ridley Scott’s ‘The Dog Stars’ Criticized for Lackluster Postapocalyptic Thrills

Kathmandu— Ridley Scott’s latest film, 'The Dog Stars,' is being criticized as a lackluster postapocalyptic thriller that fails to deliver excitement or compelling drama. The movie follows Jacob Elordi's character Hig, an ex-mechanic turned prop pilot, and his dog Jasper in a world ravaged by a flu pandemic. Despite the premise of survival against marauding bands of nomads, the film is described as mopey and uninspiring, with Elordi struggling to carry the weight of the narrative.

A Western in Postapocalyptic Drag

The film's central theme is a frontier fantasy that borrows heavily from classic Western tropes. Hig’s journey and interactions with other survivors, including tough ex-Marine Bangley (Josh Brolin), are reminiscent of the lone gunslingers and rugged ranchers seen in traditional Westerns. The narrative shifts to focus on clearing land and establishing homesteads, mirroring the Manifest Destiny ethos often depicted in classic Western films.

Criticism of Jacob Elordi's Performance

Jacob Elordi’s portrayal of Hig has been particularly criticized for its lackluster performance. Critics argue that his character is too mopey and fails to engage the audience emotionally, despite the high-stakes setting. The film’s reliance on Elordi’s ability to convey inner turmoil and determination falls flat, leaving viewers feeling disconnected from the story.

Box Office Bomb

'The Dog Stars' has also been a commercial failure at the box office, with audiences largely avoiding it. The film's reception suggests that its postapocalyptic setting and Western themes did not resonate with contemporary viewers, who found the narrative unengaging and outdated.
