Nepal’s Parliament Passes Special Motion on Bhotekoshi Flood Victims

Kathmandu— On September 2, Nepal's House of Representatives (HoR) unanimously passed a special motion addressing the tragic loss of lives and property caused by the flash floods in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers on August 26. The motion, presented by HoR Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal, paid tribute to both Nepali and foreign victims and expressed condolences to their families.

Tribute and Condolences

The meeting observed a minute of silence in memory of those who lost their lives. Speaker Aryal wished speedy recovery for the injured and emphasized the need for government and agencies to prioritize the financial and psychological well-being of flood victims, ensuring women and children have access to safe shelter and essential health services.

Climate Change Implications

Speaker Aryal highlighted that the global rise in temperature is exacerbating climate change impacts such as melting glaciers and glacial lakes. He urged raising the issue of climate crisis in international forums, noting Nepal faces national security challenges due to climate change.

Preparedness and Response

Aryal underscored that preparedness should be a cultural norm rather than just part of disaster management. Regular monitoring of glacial lakes and glaciers is essential for future prevention. He called on all levels of government, political parties, civil society, and the entire governmental machinery to mobilize resources effectively to intensify rescue efforts and rehabilitate displaced individuals.

The HoR will reconvene at 1:00pm Thursday to continue addressing the aftermath of the disaster.
