US VP JD Vance Declines Timeline for End of Iran War

Kathmandu— United States Vice President JD Vance has declined to provide a timeline for the conclusion of the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran. During a White House briefing on Thursday, Vance expressed skepticism about labeling the conflict as a war, despite recent escalations that have led to surging global energy prices and unpopularity at home.

Vance's Skepticism About War Label

At the White House news briefing, Vance sought to downplay the fallout from the conflict. He questioned whether it should be referred to as a war, stating, “I wouldn’t call it a war. Right now, there is no active shooting.” Despite acknowledging flare-ups in the region, he emphasized that major combat operations had lasted only about six weeks and that US military efforts have degraded Iran’s defense production capabilities.

Strait of Hormuz

Vance also highlighted the Strait of Hormuz as a focal point of the conflict. He accused Iran of preventing traffic flow through this vital trade route, which previously carried about 20% of the world’s oil and gas. Vance argued that US military operations were helping to create conditions for increased oil shipments through the strait.

Impact on Energy Markets

Vance asserted that a new deal transferring control of 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil reserves to the US would help lower global oil costs. He stated, “When will the Iranians shooting at ships stop having an effect on world energy markets? The answer is it has less effect day by day.” Vance also credited President Trump with preventing a larger energy crisis.

Humanitarian Concerns and Military Incidents

Vance addressed reports of US military incidents, including an attack that reportedly struck a wedding party in Sirik, killing at least five people, including children. He said the military was investigating but expressed skepticism about accounts from the Iranian government. Additionally, he acknowledged the deaths of 18 US service members and over 750 wounded since the conflict began.
