Kathmandu— Minister for Foreign Affairs Shisir Khanal of Nepal held a meeting with Cho Hyun, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kathmandu on September 6. The talks focused on the search and rescue operations following the Bhote Koshi River floods and broader climate change initiatives.

Flood Relief Operations

During the meeting, the two Foreign Ministers discussed the ongoing search, rescue, and relief operations in the aftermath of the devastating floods in the Bhote Koshi River. Minister Khanal expressed gratitude for the interagency rapid response team and the Korea Disaster Relief Team (KDRT) sent by the Government of the Republic of Korea. He also highlighted the importance of building back resilient and durable infrastructure as a priority for Nepal's post-disaster reconstruction efforts.

Climate Change and Global Forums

Cho Hyun emphasized the historical responsibility of the world community, including the Republic of Korea, in addressing the impacts of climate change, particularly on vulnerable countries like Nepal. He stated that both nations should collaborate to raise awareness about climate change in global forums such as COP. Additionally, he mentioned that the Republic of Korea would advocate for increased financial support for Nepal from the international community.

Bilateral Relations

The two Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening and elevating bilateral relations between Nepal and the Republic of Korea. They highlighted the longstanding friendship, mutual trust, and cooperation that have been the foundation of their relationship. The meeting underscored the importance of continued collaboration in various areas, including disaster relief and climate change mitigation.
