Kathmandu November 14 Deputy Speaker Dr Shivamaya Tumbahamphe acknowledged the spectacular role of media to flourish democracy. At a programme ‘Media’s responsibility in democracy’ organized by Press Organization at Kakani on Thursday, she said democracy could be well-nurtured only when the media disseminated objective and true information. As the media also has a responsibility towards the society, it should publish and disseminate the information only after verification, the deputy speaker added. Also speaking on the occasion, parliamentarian Heet Bahadur Tamang and State-3 Deputy Speaker Radhika Tamang highlighted media’s role in taking the society to right path through information. Likewise, Press Organization Coordinator Maheswor Dahal recalled media’s substantial role in mustering public support for democracy. On the occasion, journalist duo Matrika Poudel and Rituraj Subedi presented working papers on ‘media’s responsibility for enrichment of democracy’ and ‘Challenge of social media for democracy’, respectively. Nepal Press Union general secretary Ajaya Babu Shivakoti said the media is the opposition of any government but it has full responsibility to the society.
