Kathmandu— China has launched a comprehensive five-year action plan from 2026 to 2030, focusing on bolstering geological disaster prevention across the country. The initiative includes relocating 50,000 households from high-risk areas and implementing engineering projects at over 4,200 sites prone to such disasters.
Enhancing Climate Resilience
The plan emphasizes the need for improved climate resilience in the face of increasing extreme weather events. It calls for intensified risk surveys and monitoring systems, particularly focusing on disaster mechanisms triggered by rapid weather changes and abrupt drought-flood alternations.
Over the next five years, China aims to build an integrated national geological disaster information platform that leverages big data and AI technologies to enhance coordination between national and provincial systems.
Addressing High-Risk Areas
The Ministry of Natural Resources has identified nearly 280,000 geological hazard sites across the country by the end of 2025. These sites endanger over 11 million people and are a result of China's complex terrain, diverse geological conditions, and active tectonic movements.
To mitigate these risks, the plan includes eliminating safety hazards at more than 6,100 sites and relocating households from high-risk areas to safer locations.
