Kathmandu— In Michigan, the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat has become a high-stakes battle between progressive Abdul El-Sayed and incumbent Representative Haley Stevens, who is backed by significant financial support from AIPAC. As polls closed on Tuesday night, both candidates awaited results that could determine their future in Washington.

Economic Influence of AIPAC

Haley Stevens has received substantial backing from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which has contributed over $30 million to her campaign. This financial support underscores the committee’s influence in shaping political outcomes and aligning with candidates who share its policy priorities.

Progressive vs. Establishment

Abdul El-Sayed, a former public health official, has positioned himself as an alternative to the traditional Democratic establishment. His campaign emphasizes progressive policies and challenges the status quo within the party, aiming to energize supporters who are frustrated with current leadership.

Primary Night Celebrations

Supporters of both candidates gathered at their respective watch parties in Detroit as election results began trickling in. El-Sayed’s event saw an enthusiastic crowd cheering early returns, while Stevens’ team maintained a subdued but optimistic atmosphere, awaiting Wayne County results that could be pivotal.
