US Inches Closer to Strait of Hormuz Deal With Iran and Oman

Kathmandu— The United States is nearing a deal with Iran and Oman to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, aiming for an announcement on Wednesday. The arrangement would establish temporary shipping lanes in Iranian and Omani waters, clearing naval mines within 30 days, and could pave the way for renewed negotiations over Iran's nuclear program.

Strategic Importance of Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime chokepoint through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes daily. Its closure could disrupt global energy markets and trigger significant economic repercussions. Recent tensions between Iran and the US have heightened concerns over potential disruptions to this vital shipping route.

Negotiations and Diplomatic Efforts

US officials, including Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, have been in intense negotiations with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Omani counterparts. The talks aim to establish a 60-day interim agreement that would see all inbound vessels using northern shipping lanes through Iranian waters, while outbound traffic would use southern lanes managed by Oman.

Regional mediators from Qatar, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia have also been involved in the discussions, playing crucial roles in facilitating dialogue between Iran and the US.

Approval Process and Next Steps

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi agreed to the proposed arrangement over the weekend but required final approval from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to regional sources, this approval was secured on Tuesday, bringing the parties closer to a formal announcement.

The agreement is expected to clear naval mines from the median shipping lane within 30 days and establish permanent maritime traffic rules between Oman and Iran.

With the deal now in sight, all eyes are on Wednesday's announcement for details of how the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened and what this means for future negotiations with Iran.
