Deal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Appears Within Reach

Kathmandu— A deal to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz appears increasingly likely, as U.S. officials and regional mediators report significant progress in ongoing diplomatic efforts. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC on Tuesday that an agreement could be reached within days, while President Donald Trump warned Iran would face consequences if the strait is not reopened soon.

U.S. and Iranian Positions Diverge

Despite signs of progress, there remains a gap between U.S. and Iranian positions on how to proceed with reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The United States has pushed for immediate action, with President Trump warning that Iran would be “hit very hard” if no deal is reached soon.

In contrast, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei insisted Monday that no negotiations were taking place or scheduled with Washington, and instead highlighted positive discussions with Oman over the management of the strait.

Regional Mediators Play Key Role

Qatar, Pakistan, and Oman have been playing crucial roles in facilitating indirect contacts between the United States and Iran. Qatar’s prime minister adviser Majed Al Ansari said Tuesday that mediation efforts remain ongoing, with talks reaching “very progressive stages.”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the U.S. was involved in negotiations between Oman and Iran aimed at increasing traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

The current status of the negotiations remains fluid, with both sides signaling a willingness to reach an agreement but also maintaining firm stances on key issues.
