Kathmandu— The flood situation in Assam remains dire with six additional lives lost over the past day, bringing the death toll for the current monsoon season to 95. The Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) reports widespread rural inundation and critical urban flooding across multiple districts, leaving more than 160,000 people displaced.

Fatalities and Displacement

The latest fatalities include five individuals from the general flood situation—two each in Biswanath and Sivasagar districts, and one in Golaghat. One person died due to urban flooding in Morigaon district's Mayong revenue circle, while another is missing in Udalguri. Over 160,000 people have been displaced across 563 villages, with Sivasagar being the hardest-hit district, impacting over 57,000 residents.

Infrastructure Damage

The floods have caused significant damage to infrastructure. Seven major embankment breaches were reported, five in Biswanath and two in Darrang. Additionally, a steel bridge in Charaideo and a footbridge in Udalguri suffered damage. Agricultural land covering 16,951 hectares is submerged, affecting over 35,000 livestock, with approximately 8,500 animals washed away primarily in Sivasagar.

Urban Flooding and Relief Efforts

Urban centers like Guwahati are experiencing severe waterlogging. Four districts—Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, and Jorhat—are affected by urban flooding impacting 734 people. In Kamrup (M), SDRF and DDRF personnel deployed boats to evacuate 80 people from submerged localities in Satgaon and Hatigaon. The state government has intensified relief operations with 45 camps housing over 12,356 inmates and 59 distribution centers providing essential supplies to more than 32,000 people.

Authorities continue to monitor river levels as the meteorological department predicts further rainfall in catchment areas, potentially worsening the situation.
