Kathmandu— UNESCO announced on Wednesday that Beijing has been designated as the UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture for 2029, recognizing its exceptional ability to merge historical architecture with modern sustainability practices. The selection follows recommendations from the Joint Committee for the World Capital of Architecture and highlights Beijing's role in advancing sustainable urban development.

UNESCO-UIA Program Highlights

Established jointly by UNESCO and UIA, the World Capital of Architecture program aims to showcase cities that exemplify transformative roles in architecture, urban planning, culture, and heritage. Every three years, a city is chosen as the host for the UIA World Congress and designated as the UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture. This year's selection underscores Beijing’s commitment to sustainable development and its rich architectural legacy.

Beijing's Architectural Legacy

According to UNESCO, Beijing was chosen for its ability to integrate one of the world's richest architectural heritages with a forward-looking vision of urban sustainability. The city’s historic urban fabric, successful regeneration projects, and vibrant architectural culture demonstrate how heritage, innovation, and community life can reinforce each other in shaping resilient and livable cities.

Future Prospects

UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany expressed confidence that Beijing’s extraordinary architectural heritage, dynamic urban transformation, and forward-looking vision would inspire new international dialogue on the power of architecture. This designation is expected to elevate Beijing as a global leader in sustainable urban development and cultural preservation.
