Kathmandu— An unidentified drone entered Bulgarian airspace from the north and exploded near the Romanian border on Saturday morning, causing a significant blast in a sunflower field. While the explosion occurred approximately 1,000 meters from a critical gas pipeline compressor station, officials confirmed there were no casualties or damage to infrastructure. The incident has prompted Bulgaria to redeploy anti-drone countermeasures to the Romanian border and has triggered diplomatic discussions regarding the origin of the craft.

Security Response and Surveillance Gaps

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev stated that the drone was not detected by either Bulgaria or Romania prior to the explosion, noting that the small size of such drones makes them difficult to track. Following the incident, Radev announced that the government would strengthen surveillance and redeploy border police anti-drone detection and countermeasure capabilities from the Turkish border to the Romanian border.

Despite the lack of early detection, the impact of the blast was significant. Radev noted that the drone appeared to be carrying a significant amount of explosives, evidenced by the strength of the explosion and the resulting black smoke.

Investigation Into Drone Origin

The Bulgarian Defense Ministry reported that an analysis of the debris suggests the drone is of a type "widely used by the Ukrainian military." However, because the craft was damaged during the explosion, officials were unable to definitively determine if the drone was civilian or military in nature.

In response to the findings, Bulgaria has summoned the Ukrainian ambassador for consultations. While Kyiv has stated it is in close contact with Bulgarian authorities to clarify the circumstances, Ukrainian foreign ministry spokesman Georgiy Tykhyi emphasized that "the Ukrainian Armed Forces did not intentionally direct any assets toward Bulgaria."

Rising Regional Drone Incidents

The explosion highlights a growing trend of drone incursions in Eastern European countries that are members of both the EU and NATO. Romania, which shares a border with Ukraine, has experienced frequent drone incidents, including a crash into an apartment building in May.

Bulgarian Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov indicated that the incident will be discussed at an upcoming North Atlantic Council meeting. The incident follows other recent security concerns in Europe, such as the recent defusing of an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig Airport in Germany.

Teams from the Bulgarian border police and the Ministry of Defense are currently working to determine the exact origin of the drone.
