Kathmandu— Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul spoke by phone to address rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, seeking ways to end ongoing conflicts and secure maritime traffic. The discussion came as Iran proposed a strategic initiative for regional security and indicated progress on an agreement with Oman regarding management of passage through the strait, while also outlining conditions for its reopening.

Differing Perspectives on Security

Araghchi reportedly told Wadephul that securing the Strait of Hormuz hinges on ceasing US military operations, which he characterized as a naval blockade of Iranian ports. He further urged the international community to hold the United States accountable for any security or economic consequences resulting from potential closure of the waterway.

Wadephul, in turn, called on Araghchi to constructively engage with regional neighbors and the United States to resolve the conflict. The German minister emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz should be opened unconditionally to guarantee freedom and safety of navigation for all vessels.

Iran's Regional Security Initiative

Earlier this week, Iran’s parliamentary commission for National Security and Foreign Policy approved a strategic initiative intended to strengthen regional security and promote sustainable development in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz. Commission spokesman Hassan Qashqavi stated that lawmakers unanimously endorsed the plan’s general outline after reviewing feedback from relevant government organizations.

The legislative proposal, titled “Strategic Action for the Security and Sustainable Progress of the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf,” was initially submitted to the Iranian parliament on July 13.

Oman Agreement Nears Completion

Araghchi also revealed that a deal with Oman concerning a legal framework for managing traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is nearing completion. However, he indicated that reopening the strategic waterway would be contingent upon certain conditions, including financial compensation from the US for alleged violations of a prior memorandum.

Negotiations are ongoing between Iran and other parties to establish a comprehensive solution for ensuring security and stability in the vital Strait of Hormuz.
