China Sets Ambitious Goals for Ecosystem Resilience by 2030

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— China has unveiled a comprehensive development plan to bolster its ecological conservation efforts between 2026 and 2030, signaling a continued commitment to green modernization. The initiative, jointly released by multiple ministries including the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the Ministry of Natural Resources, focuses on enhancing ecosystem quality, diversity, stability, and ultimately safeguarding China’s ecological security. Specific targets include maintaining protected land areas at no less than 18 percent of the total area and increasing key environmental indices like the Ecological Quality Index (EQI) to 86.5 by the end of the decade.

Key Targets for Ecological Improvement

The development plan establishes quantifiable goals for ecological progress over the next several years. These include maintaining at least 18 percent of China’s total land area as protected areas, a commitment to preserving vital habitats and biodiversity. Additionally, the plan aims to raise the Ecological Quality Index (EQI) to 86.5, indicating an overall improvement in ecosystem health. Efforts will also focus on increasing the soil and water conservation rate to over 74 percent and boosting forest coverage to 25.8 percent of the country’s landmass.

Strategic Focus Areas

The plan outlines a multi-pronged approach to achieve its objectives, emphasizing optimization of ecological spatial configuration. This involves strategic planning for land use to maximize environmental benefits. Furthermore, it prioritizes ecosystem protection and restoration initiatives, aiming to rehabilitate degraded areas and enhance the resilience of existing ecosystems. A core component is strengthening biodiversity conservation through targeted programs and protective measures.

Legal Framework Supporting Conservation

China’s commitment to ecological preservation is reinforced by a recently enacted legal framework. The landmark Ecological and Environmental Code, which takes effect this Saturday, provides stronger legal backing for sustainable development practices. This new legislation aims to provide robust support for environmentally friendly policies and ensure long-term ecological security.

The implementation of this plan will be closely monitored as China continues its efforts toward balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability.
