Kathmandu— An oil spill originating from the disabled tanker Caroline Bezengi has reached Oman’s mainland, impacting beaches along the central coast, authorities announced Wednesday. The leak, which began in June after the vessel ran aground off Oman, currently affects approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) of coastline near Ras Madrakah and is expected to spread to a 10-20 kilometer stretch on the southern coast of Masirah Island within hours. Omani environmental authorities are conducting monitoring and response operations to limit the spill’s reach and minimize ecological damage.

Extent of Coastal Pollution

The oil slick has already impacted beaches in Ras Madrakah, with up to 40km of coastline currently affected by pollution. Authorities anticipate further contamination along the southern coast of Masirah Island, a landmass located approximately 15 kilometers off Oman’s shore. Specialized teams are actively monitoring the situation and implementing measures to contain the spread and mitigate potential environmental consequences, prioritizing areas recognized for their ecological sensitivity.

Spill Size and Environmental Concerns

The spill is estimated to cover nearly 400 square kilometers (154 sq miles), concentrated around the Hallaniyat archipelago. This area includes a marine reserve established last year dedicated to preserving habitats for sea turtles and other aquatic life. Greenpeace and other environmental groups suggest the actual size of the spill may be significantly larger than official estimates, warning of potentially devastating consequences for coastal ecosystems.

Tanker Background and Sanctions

The Caroline Bezengi has been disabled near Oman’s Al Hallaniyat Islands since June 8th following a reported explosion. The cause of this incident remains unknown. Western governments have identified the tanker, which is currently flagged under Cameroon, as part of Russia's 'shadow fleet' used to transport sanctioned Russian oil. Built in 2001, the vessel is currently subject to sanctions imposed by the European Union, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Canada and Ukraine.

Response Efforts Underway

Omani authorities stated that specialized teams are continuing monitoring, follow-up, and response operations, taking necessary measures to limit pollution spread. Priority is being given to areas of high environmental sensitivity. Greenpeace last week warned of the risk of an “unprecedented oil disaster” if urgent action isn’t taken.
