Kathmandu— In Bakau, The Gambia, a group of women known as the Kanyeleng gather each Sunday evening, not to celebrate joy but to acknowledge sorrow. Dressed in vibrant clothing symbolizing strength, they sing, dance, and share stories of loss – miscarriages, stillbirths, and the pain of childlessness – transforming private grief into collective resilience. For over a generation, these women have provided solace and support for one another, creating a unique cultural practice that extends across The Gambia and neighboring West African nations.

A Tradition Rooted in Shared Experience

The Kanyeleng tradition dates back generations, deeply embedded within Mandinka culture but adapted by various ethnic groups like the Fula and Wolof. Historian Hassoum Ceesay estimates over 100 such groups exist nationwide, offering solidarity to women navigating infertility and child loss. The practice isn't religious, but cultural – a space where shared experiences are voiced through song and rhythm. For 84-year-old Mentending Trawally, the Kanyeleng is more than just a tradition; it’s her lineage. She was born into it, following in the footsteps of her grandmother and mother.

Turning Grief Into Connection

The women's gatherings are characterized by laughter, dancing, and song, but beneath the surface lies profound grief. Through humour and shared rhythm, they collectively express experiences that can be difficult to articulate otherwise. Each member contributes a small amount to a fund supporting those facing hardship, creating a network of mutual aid. While outsiders may see only performance, Trawally explains, they miss the underlying pain that fuels it. The songs allow them to process loss and find connection.

Addressing Maternal Health Challenges

The Kanyeleng’s work occurs against a backdrop of significant maternal and newborn health challenges in The Gambia. In 2023, the country recorded an estimated maternal mortality ratio of 354 deaths per 100,000 live births – higher than the global average of 197. A study found over half of stillbirths occur during labour, raising concerns about the quality of care provided to mothers. Women’s rights advocate Tabou Sarr highlights that motherhood is often narrowly defined in Gambian society, and women who struggle with fertility or loss face stigma and isolation.

Finding Strength in New Names

For some members, joining the Kanyeleng involves receiving a new name – often one seemingly unusual to outsiders. These names are believed to offer protection against spirits associated with pregnancy loss and infant mortality. Suntukung, formerly known as Ma Yama, found solace within the group after experiencing multiple miscarriages. She was urged by her cousin to seek out the women of Bakau, who welcomed her with open arms and a new identity, signifying acceptance and belonging.

The Kanyeleng continue to meet weekly, passing down songs and traditions to younger generations, ensuring that their message of resilience and support endures. They offer not just emotional healing but also a powerful reminder that grief can be transformed into something beautiful and shared.
