Kathmandu— Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam is advocating for a defined timetable for the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon, while Hezbollah has sharply criticized the government’s approach to negotiations with Israel and accused officials of endangering the Lebanese army. The push for a resolution comes as Israel continues to occupy areas within Lebanon's southern border, leading to ongoing demolitions and displacement of residents. Discussions are focused on a framework involving Hezbollah disarmament in exchange for Israeli withdrawal, but significant gaps remain between the two sides.

Diplomatic Efforts Intensify

Prime Minister Salam met with US Ambassador to Beirut Michel Issa and General Joseph Clearfield, head of the US military coordination group for Lebanon, on Friday to discuss the ongoing negotiations and developments in southern Lebanon. The prime minister’s office stated that Salam emphasized the need for Israel to cease destructive operations, expand pilot areas for de-escalation, and establish a clear timetable for withdrawal. Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri also met with the US officials, reiterating that continued Israeli violations – including village demolitions, farmland destruction, forest fires, and damage to heritage sites – are hindering stability.

Hezbollah Voices Strong Disapproval

Hezbollah’s leader Naim Qassem strongly condemned the Lebanese government's pursuit of the deal, accusing officials of exposing the army to undue pressure and Israeli influence. He questioned how Lebanon could accept what he described as ongoing humiliation, with the army subjected to bombardment and pressures instead of being protected. Qassem further alleged that Israel is attempting to establish control over the Lebanese army’s deployment and internal operations.

Sticking Points Remain

Despite seven rounds of negotiations, little progress has been made, according to Hezbollah's assessment. The group points to continued Israeli strikes within designated pilot zones like Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh as evidence that Israel is not adhering to the agreement. US Ambassador Issa stated that Israeli attacks would cease only upon Hezbollah’s disarmament, a condition repeatedly emphasized by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, who affirmed that withdrawal will not occur until Hezbollah disarms.

Human Cost of Conflict

Lebanese authorities report that since March 2nd, Israeli attacks have resulted in 4,335 deaths, 12,277 injuries, and the displacement of over one million people. The ongoing occupation continues to cause significant damage and hardship for residents in southern Lebanon.

The next round of negotiations is anticipated to resume in early September, but a breakthrough remains uncertain given the deep divisions between the parties involved.
