Kathmandu— A bus accident in Nepal's Nuwakot district on Tuesday claimed the lives of two pilgrims and injured three others. The incident occurred at Thanabhanjyang in Shivpuri Rural Municipality while the bus was parked for lunch along the Tokha-Chhahare road, en route to the Dupcheswar Mahadev pilgrimage site. Authorities have detained the driver as they investigate how the vehicle rolled approximately 50 meters down a hillside after colliding with a van.

The Accident and Casualties

Krishnamaya Prajapati, 54, of Banepa, and Udayamaya Khatri, 65, of Ramechhap, were pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital following the crash. The bus, carrying pilgrims to Dupcheswar Mahadev, reportedly rolled away from where it was parked for lunch and collided with a stationary electric van before falling down the steep slope.

Three individuals sustained injuries in the accident: Sujata Pokharel, 25; Sharmila Shrestha, 42; and Gyanu Shrestha, 60. All three have been transported to Kathmandu for further medical care. The extent of their injuries has not been released.

Investigation Underway

Sitaram Acharya, the bus driver, is currently in police custody as authorities investigate the cause of the accident. Details regarding potential mechanical failure or other contributing factors have not yet been disclosed.

Pilgrimage Destination

The pilgrims were traveling to Dupcheswar Mahadev, a Hindu pilgrimage site located in Nuwakot district. The area is known for its religious significance and attracts devotees from across Nepal.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the exact cause of the accident and whether any further charges will be filed.
