Tropical Storm Lala Strengthens, Threatens Hawaii with Heavy Rain and Hurricane-Force Winds

Kathmandu— The Big Island of Hawaii is bracing for significant impacts from Tropical Storm Lala, which is expected to strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane before making its closest approach on Saturday. Authorities have issued warnings about damaging winds, heavy rainfall, flash flooding, and dangerous surf across the state, urging residents to take precautions as the storm began affecting the islands. The National Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane warning for the Big Island, which hasn't experienced a direct hurricane landfall in 155 years.

Storm Intensification and Forecast

Forecasts indicate that Tropical Storm Lala is expected to intensify into a Category 1 hurricane as it nears Hawaii. The US National Hurricane Center reported that damaging hurricane-force winds are anticipated on the Big Island later Saturday, with tropical storm-force winds already beginning to be felt. Rainfall totals are predicted to range from 20.3 to 30.5 centimeters (8 to 12 inches) across Maui and lower elevations of the Big Island, while higher elevations could receive up to 63.5 centimeters (25 inches).

Preparations and Warnings

Governor Josh Green warned residents in a video message on Friday about the potential for damaging winds, heavy rain, flash flooding, and dangerous surf throughout the weekend. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi encouraged residents to complete their preparations immediately, advising them not to wait for deteriorating weather conditions. Officials are urging people to seek shelter and avoid venturing outdoors during the storm.

Historical Context and El Nino Influence

The last major hurricane to directly impact Hawaii was Hurricane Iniki in 1992, which struck Kauai, resulting in six fatalities and billions of dollars in damage. Direct hurricane landfalls are relatively rare in Hawaii due to the islands’ small size and prevailing climate patterns. This storm arrives as scientists anticipate a strong El Nino phenomenon will bring extreme weather conditions across the western United States in the coming months; El Nino is characterized by warmer surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, contributing to more intense storms.

As of Saturday afternoon GMT, Tropical Storm Lala continues its approach towards Hawaii, with authorities closely monitoring its path and intensity. Residents are urged to heed all warnings and take necessary safety precautions.
