Kathmandu— China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP) announced Saturday a commitment to robust enforcement of the newly implemented Ecological and Environmental Code through diligent case handling. The pledge coincides with the code's official enactment, marking a significant step in strengthening China’s ecological governance framework. Since 2025, procuratorial authorities across the country have managed 73,000 public interest cases related to environmental protection – encompassing both administrative and civil disputes – aiming to safeguard public interests and promote law-based environmental stewardship. The SPP detailed plans to enhance the quality and coordination of litigation efforts in alignment with the new code.
Growing Focus on Environmental Litigation
The SPP reported that procuratorial authorities have been actively involved in addressing ecological concerns, handling 73,000 public interest cases since 2025. This caseload breaks down into 61,000 administrative cases and 12,000 civil cases, demonstrating a broad scope of environmental issues being addressed through legal channels. These efforts are intended to not only resolve specific instances of ecological damage but also to establish a stronger foundation for preventative measures and sustainable practices.
Representative Cases Highlight Enforcement Priorities
To illustrate its commitment, the SPP released eight representative cases on Saturday showcasing successful procuratorial interventions in environmental protection. The selected cases span critical areas such as air and water pollution control, responsible solid waste management, and the preservation of vital resources including arable land, mineral deposits, biodiversity, and marine ecosystems. These examples are intended to demonstrate the breadth of the SPP’s focus and its dedication to addressing diverse ecological challenges.
Strengthening Coordination for Comprehensive Protection
The SPP emphasized a strategy of improved coordination between different legal mechanisms aimed at environmental protection. This includes strengthening links between ecological damage compensation claims and civil public interest litigation, ensuring a more comprehensive approach to redress and prevention. Procuratorial authorities will also strive for greater consistency in the quality of public interest litigation as mandated by the new code.
The SPP’s announcement signals an intensified focus on environmental law enforcement as China seeks to implement its updated legal framework for ecological protection.
